Derek + Kevin: Married {Sodo Park, Seattle WA}

Filed in: Wedding

I’ve been staring at a blinking cursor for some time now… how can I even begin to tell you about Derek & Kevin’s wedding day. From the second you meet Derek and Kevin, you instantly feel like best friends. The both of them carry a sense of warmth and love wherever they go. From the first meeting I had with them, not only was I completely certain there was no way in heck I was going to let anyone else in the world document their wedding day, but I was one cocktail away from going to get “Derek+Kevin+Melissa= Best friends foreva ” tattooed across my lower back. As individual people, they have this magical ability to make you instantly feel loved and seen. And together, they are beyond lovely.

Fast forward to their wedding day when I arrived at Derek’s hotel room. I walked into a room overlooking the city, and the joy in the room was so palpable you could weave it into a warm fuzzy blanket and live in it. It was instantly clear why Derek was who he was. The tribe who has surrounded him his entire life and had helped mold him into the amazing man he is, was equally amazing. The morning was spent laughing until side’s hurt and before walking out the door to see his handsome groom, the group held hands and they sent Derek on his way with last minute words of love, beautiful memories of friendship, and heartfelt well wishes. It was that moment that I knew it was quite possible that Derek and Kevin were the most loved men in the entire world. It was a moment so beautiful and intimate it took every fiber of my being to not lower my camera and revel in it.

As Derek descended the staircase to see Kevin for the first time, the anticipation peaked, and as Kevin turned to see his future husband, the city fell quiet. The noise of the world fell away and it was just the two of them. This was just the beginning.
From this moment to the one where they locked eyes and met each other at the end of the aisle, you could feel how much this day meant to them. This promise. This forever. IT WAS EVERYTHING.

I don’t know if I have ever in my career witnessed such a emotionally charged wedding.  You would look around the room during every speech, every vow, every slow dance, and you could see the tears streaming. It was as if every guest and family member in that room knew they were witnessing the most beautiful love story of all time.

Derek & Kevin, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU. Thank you for choosing me. There were so many moments of your wedding day that stopped me in my tracks, made me reflect, and made me thank my lucky stars for being there. Not only to witness your marriage, but to get to know you and your people in the process. You have truly made me a better person and I love you for it. xoxo, Melissa
